Crazy me but I put the music of Jimmy Webb, Ashford and Simpson et al. in the same category as Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers et al.
It really depends on the commitment of educators to put all of this great music from different eras, societies etc., into some context.
I love “Classical” as much as the next person, I really do. But great composition did not start and end in Europe.
Listening to a ton of Isaac Hayes in preparation for this morning’s post. I really need to spend more time dissecting his music.

Thinking about the life and legacy of Count Basie today. If you play music and haven’t spent a lot of time with his catalog, you should.
The whole concept of playing in the “pocket” was a defining principle of that band. No drum machine can groove like that rhythm section.
